My sister Chris periodically sends me articles from newspapers that she thinks might be germane to me and/or my audience. I’ve started to post links to these articles on my blog (and told her I was doing so!).
She recently sent me two different articles. One titled “Frugal When They Don’t Have to Be” and the other “Save the Receipts for Home Improvements”.
I found the “Frugal” article to be a bit off.. or at least the content compared to the headline. I do run into this general theme with a lot of clients in that by the time they have accumulated their wealth they either have everything that they want (and are actually trying to get rid of stuff!) OR they simply can’t spend money. Why? Probably because the way that they got their wealth was by saving and not spending money. A person can’t change 40 years of habits very easily.
My mantra is “Healthy and Wealthy” meaning that people need to enjoy life by doing the things that they want while they are both Healthy and Wealthy enough to do so. Eventually the health piece goes away…

The other article “Save the Receipts..” is once again very germane at least in the Portland, Oregon area. House prices have again surged and tracking the cost basis in your home is important once you go to sell it. This article has a lot of good information on the things we should all do in regards to tracking the basis in our homes.
